Tiny Find

WestportNow.com Image
Students and teachers at Westport’s Earthplace, The Nature Discovery Center vacation day program today stumbled upon a baby North American snapping turtle while on their trail walk. Naturalists at the local nonprofit said the baby is believed to be only a few days old because of a presence of an “egg tooth”—a small tooth used to break the shell at birth that normally comes off within two weeks. When full grown, the turtle can live up to 30 years and weigh more than 200 pounds. (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Jaime Bairaktaris for WestportNow.com
