The Staples boys soccer team held off a determined Danbury squad 1-0 today at Albie Loeffler Field.
The win—earned with just 10 minutes left in the game—gave the Wreckers a final regular season record of 13-1-2, tops in the FCIAC.
As the first seed in the FCIAC tournament, Staples plays the fourth-place team at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday night, at Fairfield Ludlowe High School.
The winning goal was scored by defender Craig Wolgast, off a Matt Lamb corner kick.
The Wreckers sent a number of players forward in hopes of solving Danbury’s pack-them-in defense.
The Hatters were playing for a tie, which would have qualified them for the state tournament.
Staples outshot Danbury 24-1, and had a number of near-misses throughout the match.
“We’ve learned several things this season,” said head coach Dan Woog. “In our first few games, we learned we could score right before
halftime. In the middle of the year, we learned we could score goals in bunches.
“In the last two matches, we learned we could be patient and win with a late goal. All those lessons are important—especially now, as we enter our ‘second’ and ‘third’ seasons (the FCIAC and state tournaments). Everyone will be gunning for us, and we’ll have to bring our ‘A’ game every day.”
