The Westport Police Department will have extra patrols on the road this weekend to protect against those who may be driving while under the influence of alcohol.
Sgt. Jerry Shannon, police public information officer, said there will be extra patrols spot checking for drunken drivers on Friday and Saturday between 3 p.m. and 2 a.m.
No checkpoints, however, are planned for the weekend, he said.
“It’s usually pretty quiet on New Year’s Eve,” he said. “The bars are not as crowded any more.”
Most people in town go out to dinner, attend a party at a friend’s house or take part in local events like First Night, he said.
It is the second weekend in a row police have had extra patrols on the road.
Over the Christmas weekend from Friday at noon through midnight on Monday, police reported 28 motor vehicle arrests, 13 accidents of which none were fatalities and no driving under the influence arrests, Shannon said.
