UPDATE Westport firefighters today quickly extinguished a small fire in a wall of the Positano Ristorante, fire officials said.
Firefighters responded shortly after 5 p.m. to the restaurant on Powers Court, next to the Westport Country Playhouse, on a report of smoke in the building.
On arrival, they saw flames coming from a wall between the main dining room and the kitchen, said Assistant Chief Brian Meadows.
They opened the wall and quickly extinguished the fire and then checked for extension, and found none, he said.
Restaurant employees and patrons quickly evacuated the restaurant upon smelling smoke, according to the employees.
The Westport Fire Marshal was on the scene to determine the cause of the blaze.
The restaurant will be closed tonight and its reopening will depend on a health inspection on Monday, said John Cimarosa of the Westport Weston Health District, who responded to the scene.
The restaurant opened at the location last summer in space formerly occupied by the Dressing Room Restaurant.
It moved from Hillspoint Road in the Old Mill Beach area, closing on New Year’s Eve 2014 after 13 years at the waterside location.
