The Westport Board of Selectman today unanimously approved extending by one month the deadline for payment of sewer use fees from Sept. 1 to Oct. 1.
Without the extension, users would have incurred an interest penalty of 1.5 percent a month for payments made after Oct. 1
This is the first year the town has switched to charging users based on the amount of water used instead of the same charge for everyone. As a result about half of sewer users saw a decline in their annual bills while some reported more than a 200 percent increase.
The board met on Sept. 15 to review the charges (see WestportNow Sept. 15, 2010) and said it would look into the extension.
First Selectman Gordon Joseloff said the extension would aid many of the 4,000 households who saw a large increase. “Fairness is our goal and this will ease the burden,” he said.
He said the town was looking into switching to semi-annual or quarterly payments for sewer use charges beginning next year.
