A state-funded renters’ rebate program is available for those who are elderly or totally disabled through the Westport Human Services Department.
Deadline for applying is Sept. 15.
“Persons renting an apartment or room, living in cooperative housing, or a mobile home may be eligible for the program,” said Human Services Director Barbara Butler.
The rebate can be up to $900 for married couples and $700 for single persons.
The amount of the rebate is based on a graduated income scale and the rent amount plus utility payments (excluding telephone) made in the year prior (2005) to the year of application.
Maximum income for a single person is $27,700 and for a married couple $33,900.
Recipient or spouse must be 65 years of age or older. Those permanently or totally disabled who are 18 years of age or older are also eligible.
A one-year residency in Connecticut is required.
Those who qualify can arrange for an appointment to apply by calling (203) 341-1050. Home visits are also available for those who cannot travel to Town Hall.
