Busy Westport senior citizens will have the opportunity to use the Center for Senior Activities on weekends starting Saturday.
The center will be open Saturdays at 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. after seniors expressed an interest in the expanded hours.
Saturday activities will include fitness classes such as Yoga and Pilates.
Alexandra Oudheusden, who oversees Thursday night and Saturday programs, said Saturday hours are part of an effort to include working seniors in center activities and for all seniors to be able to bring their families.
She said she hopes people enjoy the scenery at the center on Saturdays in addition to attending classes.
“I hope a lot of people come and people really enjoy the center,” she said, “It’s just gorgeous this time of year. Even if people want to come and have a chat with their friends, relax, read a book, that’s as much as I can hope for.”
New instructors will lead the Saturday classes because the regular instructors were not available, Oudheusden said, but she’s fine with that.
“It’s nice to see a new face every once in a while,” she said.
The Senior Center is an important aspect of many senior citizens’ lives, Oudheusden said, because it provides a comfortable place where they can relax and socialize with other people.
She said the weekend can be a difficult time for senior citizens, especially those who live by themselves.
Saturday morning hours, she said, will “extend the time where [senior citizens] can really be out of the house and pursue things.”
