Westport’s Board of Selectmen today unanimously approved a request to award a contract for $274,000 to replace a section of high roof at The Saugatuck, the senior housing cooperative located in the former Saugatuck Elementary School at 35 Bridge St.
According to Public Works Director Stephen Edwards, who made the request, the facility’s housing association has been looking to replace the roof for five years, but it had been deemed cost prohibitive. Working with state Rep. Jonathan Steinberg and his predecessor, Joe Mioli, however, the association was able to secure a $300,000 grant, according to town officials.
Edwards said that a condition of the state grant is that it could not go directly to the Saugatuck, a private, not-for-profit group, but be administered though the municipality, the reason for the request. Some of the grant money has gone to design work.
First Selectman Jim Marpe was quick to point out that The Saugatuck is not a branch of the town government, though it leases the land from the town. The school closed in 1982 and conversion to senior housing was completed in 1996. The 36 units are limited to those 62 or older.
The roof work, which had been put out to bid and will involve a lot of wood replacement, Edwards said, is to be undertaken by Young Developers, LLC, the same company that worked on Police Headquarters and Town Hall.
