Second Annual Dog Festival Set for Sunday

From lap dogs to rescue dogs, from guide dogs to hunting dogs, canines of all breeds, sizes and barks are set to converge on Winslow Park Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the second annual Dog Festival, organizers announced.

The Westport Weston Chamber of Commerce (WWCC) is coordinating the event produced in association with TAILS, a local organization that promotes spay-neutering.

It will feature demonstrations and contests ranging from best tail wagger to best dressed, best tricks and the “dog that looks most like its owner,” said Matthew Mandell, WWCC executive director.

“After a fantastic debut last year, there was no doubt we were bringing it back,” said Mandell. “This year it will be an even bigger and better family-fun day, a three-ring circus of activities that will celebrate everything dog, so bring yours.”

Held at Winslow Park, the town’s dog park, the event and its contests will be judged by many of the town’s elected officials, said Mandell.

He added that the obstacle course, sponsored by Garavel Auto Group, will be a timed competition where the winning dog will receive a year’s supply of dog food.

The presenter and lead sponsor of the day’s events is Choice Pet.

“We are thrilled to again be the main sponsor of the Westport Dog Festival,” said William Dellipoali, director of merchandising and purchasing.

“It was apparent that this is a community of kindred spirits who truly value the special relationship to their animal companions,” he added.

“The array of activities is absolutely outstanding, and we know that this will be an unforgettable family event for dog lovers, furry and otherwise!”

According to Mandell, there will be more than 50 pet-related vendors, rescue-adoption opportunities, vet seminars, picture taking, caricatures, “and lots of giveaways as well as an assortment of food trucks.”

He said that WEBE 108, one of the day’s sponsors, will broadcast live from the event, offering tickets and prizes on air this week prior to the event.

Parking will be at the Westport Country Playhouse, adjacent to the park, and the entrance fee is $10 per person and $25 for a family of four.

Dog owners can register for the competitions online or at the festival. A rain date is set for Sunday May 21.
