UPDATE A police search for a bank robber in Greenwich late today halted all service on the New Haven Line for about an hour and forced New York-bound passengers from Westport and elsewhere to put their hands up as SWAT teams searched their train for the suspect.
“We’re stopped in Greenwich and the police with guns are searching for an armed suspect,” texted Sophie Robbins of Westport who was on the 4:31 p.m. from Westport to Grand Central Terminal. “They made everyone put their hands up as they went car by car.”
Trains were halted at Greenwich at about 5 p.m. after police said a man robbed the People’s United Bank at 410 Greenwich Ave. minutes earlier. Train service was resumed at about 6 p.m., but Metro-North said delays of up to an hour continued into the evening.
A Greenwich police spokesman said the man did not display a gun but suggested he had one and that no shots were fired. He said police would be releasing bank surveillance photos of the suspect later.
