Public Works Director Stephen Edwards today reminded residents that Westport has scheduled a household hazardous waste collection day for Saturday from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Westport Weston Health District, 180 Bayberry Lane.
“This is an opportunity for residents to clean out their basements and garages of general household hazardous materials,” said Edwards.
The department issued a list of common items found in households that can be disposed of on Saturday:
Garage: degreasers, gasoline, kerosene, mineral spirits, oil-based paints, paint strippers, paint thinners, solvents, stains, turpentine, varnishes, wood preservatives, etc.
Garden Shed: fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, pesticides, etc…
General Household: bleach, charcoal lighter, cleaning chemicals, drain cleaners, fish chemicals, flammable liquids, floor/furniture polish, mercury thermometers, moth balls, pet flea shampoos, photo chemicals, rug shampoo, spot removers, etc…
Items that can be taken to the Transfer Station Recycling Center on the Sherwood Island Connector during normal operating hours include: antifreeze, batteries (any type), fluorescent bulbs, motor oil, smoke detectors, electronics.
NOT ACCEPTABLE- ammunition, explosives, fireworks, flares, commercial waste.
