Richard “Dick” Mason Whidden, a former Westporter, died at his home on April 21. He was 93.
Born in Boston, he spent his adult life living in Westport, New London/South Sutton, N.H., and Naples, Fla.
He was predeceased by his two wives; the mother of his children, Elizabeth “Bambi” Whidden, and Joanne Lawson Whidden.
He was educated at Roxbury Latin School in Boston and Williams College in Williamstown, Mass. where he was captain of the track team. He worked for most of his career at Dancer Fitzgerald Sample Advertising Agency in New York City.
He was an avid sailor and golfer and was active in many clubs both in New London including the Sunapee Country Club and the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club and in Naples, the Wyndemere Club, the Naples Yacht Club and the Moorings Country Club.
He was a devoted husband, loving father and inspiration to his children. He had an unwavering sense of humor and optimism and will be remembered for his indomitable spirit and appreciation for the fullness of his life.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Tom Whidden and his wife, Betsy, of Essex, Susan Bonner and her husband, Larry Erdmann, of Fairfield, Bill Whidden and his wife, Heather, of White Salmon, Wash., and Rick Whidden and his wife, Gale, of Woods Hole, Mass.
He will also be missed by his grandchildren and their spouses, Avery and Elena Whidden, Holly Whidden, Christopher and Elizabeth Bonner, Ellie and Pat Malloy and Courtney and Ian Whidden; and great-grandchildren, Thomas, Maggie and William Whidden and Charlotte and Augusta Bonner.
Services will be private.
