The Westport Republican Town Committee (RTC) said today it is seeking applicants to fill the vacant Republican seat on the Board of Finance.
The seat became vacant when Charlie Haberstroh resigned upon his appointment on Dec. 22 to the Board of Selectmen. That post became vacant by the resignation for health reasons in November of Gavin Anderson.
Under the Town Charter, a board vacancy is filled by its remaining members. Since the Democrats hold four seats on the seven-member Board of Finance, they will have the final say on whether to appoint the RTC nominee.
In 2006, when Anderson was on the Board of Finance and resigned to spend more time with his family, the remaining Democrats chose a Republican replacement who was not the RTC nominee.
The announcement said the RTC has named a nominating committee headed by RTC member Robert A. LaFleur to consider applicants and then recommend a candidate to the full RTC.
RTC Chair Bob Zappi—an unsuccessful Board of Finance candidate in the 2009 election—said the committee has already begun its work. He has not indicated publicly whether he will be a candidate again.
“While Charlie has some big shoes to fill, a number of very qualified applicants have already approached us and expressed interest in the position,” LaFleur said.
He said that the ideal candidate would fill out the remainder of Haberstroh’s term and then run for a full four-year term in the November 2011 election.
Candidates will be interviewed the week of Jan. 10 and a recommendation will be made to the full RTC at its regularly scheduled monthly meeting on Jan. 18, the announcement said.
If the board vacancy is not filled within 45 days, under the Town Charter, the First Selectman may appoint a replacement. The Board of Finance can take up the RTC nomination at its scheduled Feb. 2 meeting and still be within that 45-day period.
