Rell Leaves Hospital

Saying she was tired but feeling well, Gov. M. Jodi Rell left Danbury Hospital today, three days after undergoing breast cancer surgery.

“I feel great. I feel fine,” the 58-year-old Republican governor told reporters.

Rell left the hospital shortly after 5 p.m. with her daughter. She was wearing a light green sweat suit. She underwent a mastectomy and reconstructive surgery Monday.

Rell’s recovery is on track and final tests results received just before she left the hospital were clean, the governor’s office said.

Rell is under a doctor’s order to stay home for at least another day, but she still plans to give her State of the State address when the new legislative session convenes Jan. 5.

“It’s going to be a little shorter speech. Trust me,” Rell told reporters outside the hospital.

Rell’s staff said she has stayed in touch with her office, reading correspondence and working on her speech. She will continue recovering at her home in nearby Brookfield with her husband, Lou.

“Everyone at the hospital has just been terrific, and I’m very grateful for the care and attention they’ve given to me and to my family,” Rell said in a statement released after she left the hospital.

“And of course, I’m still overwhelmed by the way people all over the state have reached out with good wishes and kind words. It has been a remarkable time,” she said.

Rell had been expected to leave the hospital as early as Wednesday and rest at home for several days, but her doctors wanted her to stay at the hospital another day to recuperate.

“Doctors have promised to give me grief if I don’t take it easy, so I promise to get plenty of rest in the next several days,” Rell said. “I’m looking forward to those gourmet meals that Lou will doubtless be whipping up.”
