Raymond E. Bowne of Westport died June 14 at Norwalk Hospital. He was 83.
Born Nov. 5, 1927, he was the son of the late Harry and Grace (Bassett) Bowne and had been a lifelong resident of Westport.
A U.S. Army veteran, he served in Korea from 1946 to 1947, obtaining the rank of tech corporal and working as a mechanic with the military police.
He was an employee of the Westport Board of Education for almost 25 years, beginning in the 1960s and was a volunteer firefighter with Vigilant Engine Co. No. 3.
Outside of work, he raced stock car No. 565 at the Danbury Racetrack in the late 50s and early 60s and loved to ride motorcycles, both on and off road, when he wasn’t on the racetrack.
He also was an avid stamp collector and enjoyed spending time at Sherwood Island, working on crossword and jumble puzzles. Sailing on Long Island Sound and going to Maine were two of his favorite summertime activities.
The “family” of friends that he leaves behind will miss his steady and consistent presence in their lives.
He is survived by his niece Linda Balocca of Norwalk.
