Westport’s Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) in a work session tonight unanimously approved a text amendment that would allow healthcare professionals to practice in corporate park districts (CPD) at six properties along Post Road West.
Text amendment 738 was proposed by Mel Barr of Barr of Barr Associates, LLC during the public hearing portion of tonight’s meeting. The P&Z later agreed that the amendment would “benefit the town to keep the buildings economically viable.”
In making his pitch, Barr said the amendment would “help protect economic viability on Post Road West …and add jobs and revenues the town.”
The reason for his proposed amendment, Barr said, is because “the office market is depressed right now.”
“We think it will maintain the corporate image of that area,” he said.
The P&Z agreed.
An executive from Norwalk Hospital earlier told the meeting the hospital was interested in moving into a property at 300 Post Road West to house a behavioral sciences unit.
Prior to the vote commissioner Chip Stephens said, “I think it’s a good idea, and the area needs the help.”
A major caveat, said Stephens, is that the commission would evaluate forthcoming site plan applications to make sure they “minimize negative influences on neighboring residents’ quality of life.”
