Power Outage Darkens Hundreds of Homes

A power outage tonight darkened hundreds of Westport homes and businesses for more than an hour in an area from Post Road East and the Sherwood Island Connector to Turkey Hill Road North.

Among those affected were the Harvest Commons condominium complex, the Sherwood Diner, Walgreen’s at 880 Post Road East, and homes along Turkey Hill Road North and parts of Long Lots Road from the Post Road to Morningside Drive North.

CL&P said 669 Westport customers were without power as of 9 p.m. but that all customers had power restored by 10 p.m.

Fire officials said someone at St. Luke Church at the corner of Long Lots Road and Turkey Hill Road North heard a loud bang at about 8:30 p.m. and then the power went out.

A CL&P crew in a yellow truck slowly drove through the darkened area shining a spotlight on poles and wires looking for the problem.

Police put temporary stop signs at the intersection of Post Road East and the Sherwood Island connector.

Side streets along Turkey Hill Road North from Post Road East to Long Lots Road were also affected, including Donald Road, Keller Lane, Peters Lane, Ambler Road, Ambler Road West, and Turkey Hill Lane.

Cedar Road and Wakenor Road off Long Lots Road also appeared to be in the dark.
