Police said they received three or four calls about the bear.

A CodeRed telephone notification to area residents said: “The Westport Police Department has received several reports of a black bear sighting in the northeast section of town.

“The bear has been sighted roaming between the area of Bayberry Lane, Highland Road, and Tupelo Road.

“We ask that you refrain from feeding or making contract with the bear. Just leave it alone.

“There are no reports of the bear being aggressive.

“As a precaution, closely monitor children and domestic animals while outside.

“Do not call 911 unless you are reporting an actual emergency.”

Police said more information is available on the Department of Energy and Environment Protection’s website.
