Playhouse Announces “Movie Tuesdays” Guest Speakers

Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward, Sidney Lumet, James Ivory and Milo O’Shea will be among the celebrity guest speakers in the Westport Country Playhouse’s “Movie Tuesdays” series beginning in September, it was announced today.

“Movie Tuesdays” offer classic movies followed by special guests talking about their experiences with the films. All guest speakers are subject to change.

“The Verdict” will be screened on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at 7 p.m., accompanied by a discussion with the film’s director, Sidney Lumet, and actors Paul Newman and Milo O’Shea.

Newman received an Academy Award nomination for his role as Frank Galvin, a down-on-his luck, drunken attorney with a medical malpractice case on his hands. O’Shea plays a corrupt judge in the 1982 film. Ticket availability for “The Verdict” is limited.

Newman will join his wife, Joanne Woodward, Playhouse artistic director, to talk about “The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds” on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. Newman directed the 1972 film starring Woodward as Beatrice, a widowed eccentric trying to raise two daughters, though barely surviving herself.

James Ivory, director of “Mr. and Mrs. Bridge,” will discuss the 1990 film with Newman and Woodward, who starred in the title roles, on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. The actors portray a strait-laced, well-to-do couple affected by the demands of their growing children in pre-WWII Kansas.

Also part of the “Movie Tuesdays” series will be Charlie Chaplin’s “The Kid” and “The Adventurer,” accompanied by Rick Benjamin’s Paragon Ragtime Orchestra, Tuesday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m., an Arts in the House presentation in partnership with the Westport Arts Center.

Tickets for each “Movie Tuesdays” evening are $30, $25 and $20, with Playhouse subscribers receiving a $5 discount per ticket.
