Tonight’s announced closing on Monday of Oscar’s Deli marks the end of a 42-year run for the Main Street icon and the last mom and pop store on the street. Owner Lee Papageorge, a nonsmoker, was diagnosed with lung cancer several months ago and is undergoing treatment at Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven. I am sorry to hear that Lee is sick and I am saddened that this last Main Street institution is closing. This was my grandfather’s favorite destination and many a memorable lunch was eaten there with him, My parents as well. All of us!
Oscar was a wonderful man, and Lee has done an outstanding job carrying on his legacy.
Wishing you good health Lee!
