WestportNow.com Image
UPDATE The Avery Center for Obstetrics & Gynecology, 12 Avery Place, was evacuated today after a mercury spill caused by a damaged blood pressure cuff. According to Assistant Fire Chief, Rob Yost, the mercury droplets leaked on to a carpet and got on to the soles of nurses’ shoes. The Fairfield County Hazardous Incident Response Team, based in Westport with technicians who included Norwalk Fire Department members, worked to decontaminate the office area and scrubs were placed in bags. Also responding was a cleanup contractor as well as Department of Energy and Environmental Protection personnel and Mark Cooper, director of the Westport Weston Health District.
