Melissa Newman, one of Paul Newman’s five daughters, spoke briefly to reporters today outside the Newman’s Westport home, saying her father was “awesome to the end.”

The legendary actor died Friday night at the age of 83 while surrounded by family and close friends.

“He was just incredible,” said Melissa Newman, 47. “The whole thing was really—we’re really blessed and very, very lucky, We had awesome people helping us and – it was as beautiful as it could be.”

Asked about her father’s legacy, she said :”Just look out for each other, and that’s what he was all about. And he was awesome to the end, and he’s an awesome guy, and his spirit will be with us forever and ever and ever.”

Melissa Newman said anyone who wants to honor the memory of her father “should know that what he was all about was doing things for other people.”

She suggested ways to honor his memory might include bringing soup to a friend and being philanthropic “by donating money to something you care about.”

She added his memory would also be served by voting, and by donating money to his Hole in the Wall Gang Camp Association.

Amen.  I don’t know of one Westporter who isn’t grateful for the life of Paul Newman and the gifts he shared with the community and the world.  Is there anyone who doesn’t buy Newman’s Own products (and will continue to do so) because of all the profits that go to help needy people?  Paul Newman lived his life on his own terms and we are blessed that he was such an example of an “awesome person”.  My prayers are with his family who will miss him very much.

We have walked together in the Garden
Under many a moon, under many a sunny Sky,
And wondered how it all Begun
The best of times for you and I.
We had it pretty good you Know
Keeping each other in Tow,
When waves crashed against our Craft
We balanced our oars and sailed Through.
And if ever it was too quiet, we easily Laughed,
And if ever it was too noisy, I simply loved You
And you loved Me,
And that’s how it will Be
For the next several years as you Continue
To plant your garden or prepare the Sunday Menu
Though you won’t see me There
Sitting in my Chair,
My love will be in all that you Touch
For it is true, I loved you that Much.
