Mary Jane O’‘Donohue Knapp passed away on Dec. 22 at her East Norwalk residence. She was 64.
A daughter of the late Peter J. O’Donohue and Dorothy Gorman O’Donohue, Mary Jane was born in Stamford and after briefly residing in Darien and Stamford, moved with her family to Norwalk and resided for 50 years at the family home on Cove Avenue in East Norwalk.
A graduate of Norwalk High School, Class of ‘64, M. J. is remembered by many friends for her warm, generous and outgoing personality and her courageous spirit.
Mary Jane loved nature, wildlife, the ocean, and she particularly enjoyed the view of Norwalk Harbor from her “Cottage”. She was an ardent advocate of animal rights and devoted many hours to supporting dog rescue activities.
She was especially fond of Afghan Hounds and continuously raided them as an adult. She loved riding horses in her youth, the fine arts, working in fashion (she managed the Gallery Shop in Westport), and working with people (she was a beloved psychiatric aide at the Silverhill Foundation in New Canaan for many years).
Mary Jane is survived by a sister, Dr. Deirdre O’Donohue of Manhattan, N.Y., a brother Peter A. O’Donohue, a U. S. diplomat stationed in Quebec, Canada, as well as nephews, Ian and Peter D. O’ Donohue of Berkeley, Calif., a niece Kate O’Donohue of Madison, Wisc., and her former husband, Garry Knapp of Stratford.
Friends wishing to remember Mary Jane may choose to make a donation to PAWS, Pet Animal Welfare Society, 504 Main Ave, Norwalk, CT 06851, www.pawsct.org or the World Wildlife Federation, www.worldwildlifefund.org .
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are in the care of Collins Funeral Home.
