Marking a 239th Anniversary

WestportNow.com Image
The Minute Man Monument at Westport’s Compo Beach on Wednesday, the eve of today’s 239th anniversary of the departure of British forces from Compo Beach after a raid on Danbury led by Maj. Gen. William Tryon during the American Revolutionary War. As the British marched back to their ships off Compo, the local militia, operating from behind stone walls, trees, and buildings, constantly fired on them. Today at 7 p.m., the Westport Historical Society will present a talk about Tryon’s 1777 raid by history buff Ed Hynes. (See WestportNow April 14, 2016).
