Brendan Lesch’s electrifying overtime goal stunned Trumbull 1-0 this afternoon in Staples boys soccer.

The 92nd-minute strike – a twisting, diving header off a lashing cross from Greg Gudis – powered Staples (now 14-2-1) into the FCIAC tournament semifinals.
They face Wilton on Monday, at a time to be determined, at Fairfield Ludlowe High.The quarterfinal, at Loeffler Field, seesawed back and forth. hough Staples outshot the Golden Eagles 15-9, and led in corner kicks 7-2, the guests were tenacious.
Goalkeeper James Hickok made two superb saves – one diving to his left, the other high in traffic – and defender Sean Gallagher cleared a ball off the line, to preserve the shutout.
“We needed a game like this,” said Wrecker head coach Dan Woog.
“We had to play hard against an excellent opponent. We had to fight for everything. We’ll take today and carry it with us, hopefully through a long FCIAC and state tournament run
