Westport attorney Elliot Warren made the comments after Jennifer Valiante, 31, of 4 Reichert Circle, was arraigned in Bridgeport Superior Court on charges in connection with the case.  Judge William Holden kept Valiante’s bond at $2 million and set a hearing for Nov. 24.

Warren argued that Valiante knew of the possible charges against Navin for some time, but did not attempt to flee. He said Valiante has maintained “she has nothing to do with this and we are waiting for our day in court.”

He added: “She was looking for Kyle’s parents as soon as she realized they were missing and trying to help find them. In order to be guilty of a conspiracy you need to have knowledge of what is going to occur. ”

Asked about text messages between Valiante and Navin detailed in her arrest warrant, Warren said: “These are a small sampling of dozens of text messages a day that went between Kyle and Jennifer.

“I think a lot of them you may think as incriminating have been juxtaposed and are not in context with the conversation. And she would deny that she said anything in the text or orally to anybody that related to this crime.”

Police arrested Valiante Friday night at her Westport home and charged her with conspiracy to commit murder and obstruction of justice.

According to the arrest warrant, Valiante with Warren present was questioned several times at Westport police headquarters during the investigation. Westport police have said repeatedly they are not involved in the investigation.

The arrest warrant detailed a tumultuous relationship Kyle Navin had with his parents and disclosed that his parents were planning to cut him out of their will.

Jeffrey W. Navin, 56, president of J&J Refuse in Westport, and his wife, Jeanette L. Navin, 55, a Weston school paraprofessional, were reported missing since Aug. 7 after not being seen since Aug. 4.

Their bodies were found Thursday at an abandoned house in Weston, each with a bullet wound and each with a J&J Refuse t-shirt.
