UPDATE Today’s closure of Westport public schools, announced on the school telephone snow line just before 6:45 a.m.—well after nearby schools announced cancellations—brought criticism on social media and elsewhere. Some Staples High School teachers had already arrived at school, and some students were on buses or at bus stops when the announcement was made. There were reports of communication problems with the telephone line. A Tweet at about 6:30 a.m. from 2013 Staples graduate Jacob Meisel, an amateur meteorologist studying at Harvard University with followers @swctweather, said: “If Westport schools choose to open today, ignoring all districts around them, it would be a very stubborn/dangerous decision. Ill-advised.” Several other Tweets also criticized the timing of the announcement. There was no response from Schools Superintendent Elliott Landon when asked for comment. I think it is important for school and town officials to explain the manner and method for this incident.
