Kenneth W. Osterberg of Niantic and formerly Fairfield, died July 1 at home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was 83.
The husband of Gloria DeMattia Osterberg for over 58 years was born April 26, 1934 in Fairfield. He was a lifelong Fairfield resident prior to moving to Niantic 14 years ago.
He attended Roger Ludlowe High School, class of 1954 where he was a member of Ludlowe’s football team. He also was proud to have served in the U.S. Army with the 82nd Airborne. He was co-owner of DeMattia Fuel in Westport.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his two sons, Kenneth Osterberg and his wife, Margie of Newington and Kurt Osterberg and his wife, Allison of Trumbull; five grandchildren, Joseph, Sarah, Ashley, Adam and Kyle Osterberg; his two sisters-in-law, Delores Carter of Essex and Fran Osterberg of Trumbull; his special, lifelong friend, Virginia Mullady of Niantic and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his beloved dog, Duffy. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Charles and Jack Osterberg and his three sisters, Helen Vroom, Betty Sutay and Ruth Shutt.
The family would like to thank hospice for the wonderful care they provided and the nurses and aides of Vitas Healthcare who were very caring.
Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, July 6 at 11 a.m. at St. Pius X Church with interment to follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery. A wake will take place on Wednesday, July 5 from 4-7 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield.
