Joan Cottingham of Westport died Aug. 20. She was 86.

She was born in Fort Wayne, Ind. on Nov. 18, 1926. She spent her younger years living in New York City, working as a promotional writer at several major television networks. She later moved to the Westport area and often enjoyed the Connecticut beaches with her friends and companions.

She was employed as a case researcher for Blue Cross/Blue Shield at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Manhattan until her retirement. Her family always relied on her terrific memory and love of nostalgia for the recalling of family stories, interesting events and song lyrics.

She was an avid photographer during a time when home movies had just been introduced. She had a solid alto voice and loved to sing and listen to music. She loved to talk and get to know people. Jo had a deep regard for animals, particularly for her dog, Murdock, and cats Rusee and Muffin.

She is survived by her niece, Heidi Best of Ithaca, N.Y. and nephews Steven (Ellen) Best and David Best of Henrietta, N.Y., two grandnieces, a grandnephew and many friends.
She was predeceased by her brother and sister, Robert Cottingham and Ruth Cottingham Best and her nephew, Stuart Cottingham.

A memorial gathering will be held by the family at a later date.

Contributions in her name can be made to your local animal shelter or library.
