J. Elwood Betts, 89

He was born in Westport at home on Oct. 1, 1925, son of the late Charles E. and Marjorie (Foster) Betts and has been a lifelong resident of Westport. He was employed as an engineer with General Electric for 42 years prior to retiring in 1989.

He was a 1943 graduate of Staples High School, and a 1946 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) with a degree in chemical engineering. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant.

A lifelong member of the Saugatuck Congregational Church, he served the church in many capacities. He was a deacon and a trustee emeritus.

He worked ardently on the restoration committee of the Evergreen Cemetery and was instrumental in having the firewalls installed that saved the historic church building during the 2011 fire.

His wife, Ilene H. Betts, predeceased him. Survivors include two sons, Paul Elwood Betts and his wife, Holly Goss Betts of Westport, Bruce A. Betts and his wife Lisa of Connecticut, three stepsons, Irving G. Calish Jr. and his wife Susan of Oregon, Todd A. Calish and his wife Charlene of California, Matthew B. Calish and his wife Gabriela of Easton, one stepdaughter, Caren Gagliano and her husband Louis of Westport, one brother, Foster Betts and his wife Theresa, and one sister, Catherine Comstock all of California, eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by his first wife Jeanne Grace Zwygart.

Friends are invited to attend a memorial service Saturday, Nov. 29 at 11 a.m. in the Greens Farms Congregational Church, 71 Hillandale Road, with the Rev. Allison Patton officiating. Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 28 in the Harding Funeral Home, 210 Post Road East, from 5 to 8 p.m.
