Westport’s Unitarian Church was overflowing today for a memorial service for actress Dorothy Bryce, a longtime Westport resident who died May 21 at the age of 85. (See WestportNow May 21, 2009) Daughter-in-law Jodi Stevens Bryce, wife of son Scott Bryce of Westport, sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” one of Dorthoy Bryce’s favorites, at the close of the service. Dorothy Bryce would say “Replace fear with faith” and she did that all her life. The hundreds who came to celebrate her life yesterday attested to the fact that she did that so well. A life well lived—giving back to her community in many organizations, a wonderful career, living joyfully for the last five years with her son, daughter-in-law and adorable grandson in her home, truly living a life affirming the worth of every person, good relationships with everyone she knew, a survivor of breast cancer, colon cancer and liver cancer for 30 years. Thank you to all in her family who so lovingly brought all the pieces of her life together so we could remember Dorothy. A very special afternoon, capped off by Jodi’s singing of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. AND a standing ovation that went on for probably 5 minutes. Rest in peace, Dorothy, and thank you for being an example of how to LIVE.
