Herbert Hartmann of Lahaina, Hawaii and Old Saybrook, a former Westport resident and husband to Carol (O’Neil) Hartmann, died Nov. 24 after battling leukemia. He was 73.
He was born in Rego Park, N.Y. to the late Herbert and Grete Hartmann. He was a resident of Westport for 38 years.
He graduated from of Duke University, where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in business. He accepted a position at IBM and retired after more than 30 years as a top sales executive. After retirement, he held consulting positions before more deeply pursuing his long time passion of photography.
He had a keen interest in watching and photographing whales and became an Ocean Ambassador with the Pacific Whale Foundation in Lahaina.
He frequently traveled to visit with the family while supporting and photographing the grandchildren’s many sporting events. He loved to travel and was very proud to have completed the New York City Marathon in 1980. However, his greatest pride was his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his three sons, Rob and his wife, Lisa of Westport, Mike and his wife, Jill of Swampscott, Mass., and Brad and his wife, Denise of Easton. Also by sister, Jan Holt and her husband, Gene of Cumming, Ga.; and his grandchildren, Scott, Ryan, Caitlin, Meghan, Kelly, Kacey, Ally, Julia and Matt; and nieces and nephews, Chris, Stacy, Heather and Brian.
Friends are invited to greet the family on Tuesday, Dec. 3 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Shaughnessey Banks Funeral Home, 50 Reef Road, Fairfield, and the funeral services on Wednesday, Dec. 4, at 11 a.m. at First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, Fairfield. Interment will follow at Oak Lawn Cemetery.
