Gov. M. Jodi Rell was resting comfortably today after surgery Monday for breast cancer, her office said.
Rells doctors said Monday evening that her mastectomy and reconstructive surgery at Danbury Hospital was successful and ғeverything looks very good,” a statement said. Rell is expected to remain in the hospital until Wednesday.
The governor expressed her deep gratitude for the outpouring of good will from the people of the state, according to the release.
She said she was eagerly looking forward to celebrating the University of Connecticuts 39-10 victory over the University of Toledo in Monday nightҒs Motor City Bowl in Detroit.
IӒm very touched by the kind and thoughtful words I have received, Rell said. ԓThe people of Connecticut have always proven themselves kind and caring.
“I never expected to be on the receiving end of their generosity, and I have to tell you, its truly overwhelming. I thank everyone for their prayers, thoughts and good wishes.”
Rell said she was able to watch the second half of the UConn game.
“What a morale booster!Ҕ she said. I knew the Huskies would do it. OhioӒs Gov. Bob Taft owes me a basket of goodies from Toledos famous hot dog restaurant, Tony PackoҒs, and I plan to enjoy every bite, doctors orders or not.Ҕ
Rell had bet a pair of New England clam bakes from Captn JohnҒs Clambakes of Norwalk against the Tony Packos gift basket offered by Taft.
UConn Head Coach Randy Edsall has promised the game ball to Rell, an honor Rell said touched her heart, the statement said.
ғI plan on inviting the team to the Capitol to honor them, not just for this great victory but also for their many contributions in transforming the UConn football program into one of the best in the nation, Rell said.
