George W. Underhill, Westport’s former tax collector and a two-term Representative Town Meeting (RTM) member, died May 5 at his home in Guilford. He was 79.
A 37-year Westport resident, he resigned from the RTM effective Feb. 1, 2013 and said he would move to a newly constructed home in Guilford.
“We’re staying within the State of Connecticut, but moving up the line, downsizing if you will,” Underhill told WestportNow at the time.
He was born Aug. 18, 1937 in Nashua, New Hampshire, the son of the late George and Dorothy (Carrier) Underhill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He graduated from Boston University and spent the majority of his business life in the banking industry
An accountant, he moved to Westport in 1975 with his family from Massachusetts after transferring from the Bank of Boston to Chase.
In Westport, he volunteered as treasurer of the Republican Town Committee, a job he held for 12 years. In 1993, former Republican First Selectman Douglas Wood offered him the post of tax collector.
“I retired in 2009, and I went through four administrations,” said Underhill, who also served under First Selectmen Joseph Arcudi, Diane Farrell, and Gordon Joseloff.
After retiring as tax collector, Underhill was elected to represent District 4 on the RTM. He served on its employee compensation, public protection, and rules committees.
He was also active in the Masons for 58 years, including as a member of Temple Lodge 65 in Westport. He has served as Past Master and AGM of the Grand Lodge of Masons of the State of Connecticut.
While he looked forward to “really retiring,” Underhill said in 2013 he had nothing but fond memories of the town.
“Westport has been good to us,” he said, noting that his grown children all went through the town’s schools. “It’s going to be difficult to match it, but we’re going to give it a try.”
In Guilford, he served as an alternate on the Planning and Zoning Commission.
