UPDATE Workers at a small park at Westport’s Post Road East and Main Street struck a gas main today, forcing evacuation of two buildings at 9 and 17 Main St.

Police blocked off Main Street at Post Road East after the incident which occurred shortly before 2 p.m. At 2:17 p.m. the line was shut down, said Assistant Chief Rob Yost.
A crew from Southern Connecticut Gas Co. was on the scene working in the small park adjacent to the old library. Main Street was reopened to traffic at 2:40 p.m.
A supervisor from the utility said a inch and a quarter line had been severed. There were no injuries.
