A former Staples High School math teacher and swim coach faces eight years in prison and a lifetime on a sex offender registry after pleading guilty in Bridgeport Superior Court today to sexually assaulting two girls—who are now 12 and 9—over a three-year period, the Connecticut Post reported.
Jeffrey Schare, 44, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree sexual assault, two counts of risk of injury to a minor and one count of fourth-degree sexual assault, the report said. According to the Post, Superior Court Judge Robert Devlin said he would impose the eight -year term and lifetime sex offender registry when Schare is sentenced Oct. 3.
The arrest warrant cited by the Post states that Schare, who for seven years in Westport coached the Wreckers boys swim and dive teams, began “grooming” the girls who attend school in Fairfield when they were very young, “promising favors such as food and sleepovers as rewards for his deviant behavior.”
Schare, of Fairfield, left Staples in November 2012. He has been free on $150,000 bond.
