Former Police Captain’s Son Recalled With Fondness

Today’s Arizona Star, in a story headlined “People he never met called him buddy and mate, friend and mentor,” tells of the 37-year-old son of a former Westport police captain who died suddenly of a heart attack in July.

“David Barr freely gave away his talents and died too young,” the newspaper said in the Tucson-datelined story.

Barr’s father, Fred, retired from the Westport force and moved with his wife to Arizona two years ago. Their son David accompanied them.

“(David) Barr, a high-school dropout and self-taught auto mechanic, photographer and computer programmer, had a rich online life that parents Fred and Nancy Barr never glimpsed until his death,” the newspaper said.

“They were continually surprised in the weeks following his death as tributes to him arrived from friends in Atlanta, Cincinnati, Sydney, New Dehli, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

“These people who had never met him face-to-face called him a buddy and a mate, a friend and a mentor. They spoke of his compassion and his patience and said they loved him and will miss him.”

The newspaper quoted Fred Barr as saying: “It’s unbelievable to me that David had touched so many people all over the world and probably would never meet them.”
