Dar Williams: accomplished singer and songwriter. Contributed photoDar Williams, a singing and songwriting force on the New England folk scene, will be on stage at the Westport Country Playhouse on Jan. 7.
The concert starts at 8 p.m. and is part of the “Arts in the House” series co-presented by the Westport Country Playhouse and the Westport Arts Center.
Opening act is Freedy Johnston, a folk/rock singer-songwriter.
Dar Williams is an idiosyncratic songwriter who writes folk songs from a unique, often insightful perspective. Her songwriting and performing style have been compared to Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez.
She’s an accomplished singer with a three-octave, supple and fluid voice, and a songwriter for the next generation.
After her first album, “The Honesty Room,” hit the national airplay charts, Joan Baez recorded three of Williams’ songs and toured with her in the U.S. and Europe.
Also, Ani DiFranco toured Australia with Williams, Pete Seeger did “The Conan O’Brien Show” with her, The Indigo Girls played a now-legendary show at Alcatraz with her to benefit the prisoner-rights group Bread and Roses and SaraMcLachlan had Williams on the Lilith Fair tour for two years.
Johnston, who will open the show, has albums that have graced the top ten list of many major magazines including People, Spin, Musician and Billboard. He has toured with artists including Soul Asylum, Matthew Sweet, theLemonheads and They Might Be Giants.
Tickets for the concert are $45, $35 and $25. Playhouse subscribers and Arts Center members receive $5 off per ticket.
