First Quarter Taxes Due July 1

Westport Tax Collector Peggy Klein today reminded residents that first quarter real estate taxes, personal property taxes, motor vehicle taxes and sanitary sewer use and assessment charges are due July 1.

She said bills will be mailed next week and taxpayers have until Aug. 1 to pay taxes without penalty.

If paid late, accounts will be subject to an 18 percent annual, 1.5 percent per month, penalty. The minimum interest charge is $2.

Klein stressed that failure to receive a bill does not negate charges or interest. She added that all tax ills may be paid by credit card, debit card or direct withdrawal from a checking account on-line at http://www.westportct.gov.

Checks should be made payable to Town of Westport and mailed to: Tax Collector – Westport, P.O. Box 350, Westport, CT 06881

In-person payments may be made at the Tax Collector’s Office, Room 109 in Town Hall from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily Monday through Friday.

In addition, Klein said that the initial tax bills will include notice that a supplemental tax billing may be necessary in the future.

This possible supplemental billing may be necessary to account for the State of Connecticut’s budget shortfalls which may be transferred to municipalities in the form of additional taxes.
