UPDATE Westport fireifghters, diverted just before the start of today’s Memorial Day parade, took 20 minutes to knock down a basement fire in a two-story colonial at 16 Baker Ave. There was extensive fire and water damage to the basement and smoke damage throughout the house, said Assistant Chief Mike Kronick. Two persons were transported to the hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. Twenty-seven firefighters from Westport and Norwalk battled the blaze, which was initially reported at 8:41 a.m. as smoke in the basement. Cause of the fire is under investigation, Kronick said.
