The Westport Fire Department welcomed four new recruits today who will fill in slots as other firefighters are promoted to officer positions.
The new firefighters are Turker Aksoy, 33 of Bethany, David Janofsky, 21, of Bethel, Michael Scalzo, 24, of Newtown and Kevin Dumas, 24, of Milford. They were the top candidates out of a pool of 235 candidates, said Fire Chief Christopher Ackley.
“They are the cream of the crop,” he said.
Ackley told the recruits they were joining one of the last honorable professions and they will be their brothers’ keepers.
“It will be as awesome as it is rewarding,” he told the recruits and the small crowd at Fire Headquarters.
He told them that their training is a never-ending process and they should listen to their senior firefighters because they have a lot to learn.
First Selectman Gordon Joseloff, who administered an oath of office to the recruits, said they were joining a department that may be among the best in the state.
Westporters support the department, he said, because they know the unique demands on the firefighters.
Ackley said the recruits will head to the Connecticut Fire Academy on Monday for 10 weeks. They will complete their training just before Christmas, he said.
They then work in a probation period for one year where they will rotate through all the shifts, he said.
Fire officials have already promoted two people, and Ackley said two more promotions will happen before the end of the year.
