Promotions are planned at the Westport Fire Department this summer, but department officials need more than $93,000 before they move forward.
Department officials will seek $93,625 from the Board of Finance during its meeting on Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Town Hall.
Fire Chief Christopher Ackley said the money would cover the vacancies created by the promotions.
Several of the promotions were supposed to be made during the 2005-06 fiscal year, which ends today, but it didn’t happen, he said.
“The testing took longer than we expected,” he said. “I didn’t want to just throw people into positions to fill them. I want to make sure things are right.”
In order to save some money, department officials are also planning to phase in the promotions, he said.
This summer, Ackley said, he plans to promote a training officer, a lieutenant and a fire inspector.
The Board of Selectmen voted to extend Mark Amatrudo’s contract as interim deputy chief for six months, he said, and he would promote a deputy chief at the end of the calendar year.
At that time, he said, he would have to promote a new assistant chief as well.
The promotions would leave five firefighter vacancies, he said, and the department will have to hire five new ones before the end of the year.
The first round of promotions, Ackley said, could come as early as late July.
