A Fairfield mother who snatched a tip jar off the counter at Westport’s Village Bagels on New Year’s Eve and then dipped into a second tip jar to pay for her order as her kids ran around the store has been arrested by Westport police.
They said an anonymous tip led them to Stacy Flanagan, 44, of Fairfield’s Southport section after the manager of the store at 1874 Post Road East made a surveillance video available to local media. He said more than $100 was taken.
The video showed a woman wearing a parka with sunglasses on her head snatch the tip jar from the counter, put it under her parka, and quickly zip up the jacket. Seconds later she is seen taking money out of a nearby second tip jar as a young boy runs around a few feet away.
Police said Flanagan – who published reports said was arrested in 2010 on a shoplifting charge at a Fairfield Stop & Shop while with her 2-year-old daughter—turned herself in Friday at Westport police headquarters on an outstanding warrant and admitted taking the money.
She was charged with larceny sixth-degree theft from a building and two counts of risk of injury to a child. She was released after posting $2,500 bond and is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on March 3.
Ken Kaplan, manager of Village Bagels, told Cablevision News-12 when the video was released: “She took her time, and her son was walking back and forth and her daughter was trying to get some orange juice…and all while this was going on, she was doing her thing with the tip jar.”
According to published reports, Fairfield police arrested Flanagan on Dec. 14, 2010 after she was attempting to leave the Fairfield Stop & Shop with more than $400 in groceries without paying. She was detained with her 2-year-old daughter, a police report said.
She reportedly told police she forgot to pay because she was in a rush to pick up her other child from school. She was charged with fifth-degree larceny, later pleaded guilty and was fined $300.
