Estrid Harriett (Carlberg) Coates, age 85, of Westport, passed away on July, 25 at home.
She was born in Plainville, to Astrid and Otto Carlberg. She grew up in Bridgeport and graduated from Bassick High School in 1942.
Estrid loved to dance, play bridge, go to Broadway shows, cook and entertain her family and friends. She loved to knit and made afghans for everyone she knew. And, she loved Compo Beach in Westport and the view at St. Mary’s By The Sea in Black Rock.
Some of her fondest memories were of dancing the night away in her youth at The Ritz and Pleasure Beach Ballrooms in Bridgeport.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. She is survived by her three children: Norman Coates and his partner, Robin Schurtleff, of Orleans, Calif., Darryl Coates Manning and her husband, Gerry Manning, of Black Rock, Treavor Coates and his wife, Sarah Leonard, of New York and Boston.
She’s also survived by four beloved grandchildren: Melonie Coates Parrish, Carl Coates, Lauren Manning Price and Thomas Manning. And by two brothers, C. Roland Carlberg of Bridgeport and Roy H. Carlberg and his wife, Solveig Carlberg, of Norwalk.
A memorial service will be held at the Unitarian Church in Westport at a later date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory maybe made to a charity of choice or to the Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital.
