Elma Ernst Fay of New Canaan, a former Westport resident, died March 27 at Norwalk Hospital after a long illness. She was 96.
Born March 1, 1918 in Quincy, Ill. to the late Charles and Anna Ernst, she and her late husband, Edward R. Fay lived in Westport for many years.
She was a graduate of Quincy College. During World War II, she joined the American Red Cross and served in Europe from 1943-45 as leader of Clubmobile Group K. She wrote a memoir about her war experiences, “Through a Donut Hole.”
After the war, she pursued a career in nonprofit organizations both in New York City and Westport. Both she and her husband were active in many local civic organizations in Westport and Norwalk.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews and many friends.
A private graveside service will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Norwalk.
