Donald H. Saltus, a former longtime Westport resident who lived on Compo Road South, died Oct. 28 in Georgetown, Texas after a short illness. He was 79.
He was born March 28, 1929 in Westfield, Mass. He was an army veteran who served in Japan during the military occupation following World War II.
He went on to obtain a degree in education from Fairfield University under the GI Bill.
He married Barbara Ann Henry, his wife of 52 years, on July 28, 1956.
Following his wedding, he embarked on a long teaching career in Weston and later Darien, where he became a trailblazer in the field of special education. He retired in 1992.
He is survived by his wife Barbara and five children; his daughter Bobbi and son Matt of Austin, Texas; sons Jocko and Duke of Westport; and son Brett of Fairfield. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Maggie, Tim, Jake, Zach, Tucker, Mac, Nick, Bennett, Jack and Jed. In addition, he is survived by his great-grandson Dylan.
His life was celebrated in private by his family. He will be greatly missed.
