An almost sold-out crowd tonight attended the opening night performance of “What the Butler Saw,” a British farce by playwright Joe Orton who died in 1967 at age 34. The show premièred in London in 1969. The play’s director John Tillinger said tonight, “What a pity Joe never got to see the success of this extraordinary play.”  Tillinger said he directed productions of the play four times over three decades, Manhattan Theatre Cub in 1989, London’ Wyndham Theatre in 1991, in Los Angeles in 2014 and this year in Westport.
