Westport firefighters quickly doused a compactor fire. WestportNow.com photoA compactor fire at the Wild Oats Market on Post Road West today forced evacuation of the store before firefighters were able to douse the flames.
The fire erupted in the compactor at the rear of the store at about 3:45 p.m., sending smoke throughout the store and forcing evacuation of customers and employees.
Firefighters had to pry open the compactor to get at the flames. They set up fans at the front of the store to help clear smoke that had drifted in from the outside.
The store reopened at about 4:35 p.m. following an inspection by a representative of the Westport-Weston Health District.
