Comings & Goings: du Pont Jewelers Leaving Main St.

One of Westport’s remaining independent downtown merchants, Francois du Pont Jewelers, will close its store at 105 Main St. by the end of February and move to another “close-by” site in Westport,  according to owner Noel du Pont (above).  A Westport resident and graduate of Staples High School in 1978, du Pont said the store was opened by his father, Francois, in August 1980 and Noel worked in the store since then. “I’m going to remain local and everything’s good,” he said. “It’s the time to do it. I don’t need Main Street any longer. Our name is known. It’s a new beginning. There’s life after Main Street.”  Philosophizing about the economics of Westport’s Main Street, du Pont said, “Main Street is basically one block, not like Greenwich Avenue (Greenwich). That’s why landlords can demand such high rents. On the other hand, once you’re off Main Street you get to work with local landlords, people whose faces you know and see around town.” He added: “Even with the option of a new lease I would have moved, but I’ll still be close by. It’s a new beginning and a wonderful time for our customers, for my wife Julia and for me.” (CLICK TO ENLARGE) Dave Matlow for WestportNow.com
