A 19-year-old University of New Haven coed who often visited and stayed with a close friend in Westport was killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday night, police said.
A youth arrested in the Yonkers, N.Y. shooting of Jessica Santos, 17, of Tarrytown, N.Y., was arraigned Tuesday on a charge of second-degree murder
Anthony Burton, 17, of the Bronx also was arraigned on an unrelated criminal trespass warrant from a previous incident.
Santos, a criminal justice student who was supposed to start her sophomore year today at the University of New Haven, was struck by a single bullet Sunday night in Yonkers, according to the Journal News of White Plains.
“I never thought in a million years that something like this could happen,” friend Celeste Hanley, 19, of Westport, told the newspaper. “She was an amazing person.”
Hanley met Santos during freshman year, and the two quickly became good friends, the report said.
Since Hanley lives in Westport, the young women would get together during school breaks and even stay at each other’s homes. They spent the summer going to the beach and hanging out, the newspaper said.
“She was always happy, and she always tried to make the best of every situation,” Hanley said. “I know we will see her in heaven.”
